Pengertian Modal Auxiliary Verbs

Modal Auxiliary atau sering dikenal juga dengan istilah Secondary Auxiliary Verbs merupakan kata kerja bantu yang memberikan arti tambahan pada Main Verbs dalam kalimat, seperti menunjukkan sesuatu yang akan terjadi (futurity), menunjukkan nasihat (advice), menunjukkan kewajiban (duty), menunjukkan kemungkinan (probability) dan lain sebagainya.

Penggunaan Modal Auxiliary Verbs

Yang termasuk dalam Modal Auxiliary yaitu : shall, should, will, would, can, could, may, might, must, ought, need, dare dan used. Saya akan membahas satu persatu dari Modal Auxiliary beserta penggunaan dalam kalimat.

Shall

Shall bisa digunakan untuk menunjukkan hal-hal sebagai berikut :

• Kejadian yang akan dilakukan (futurity) dalam sebuah kalimat.
  Contoh :
  – I shall go to Jakarta tomorrow. (Saya akan pergi ke Jakarta besok).
• Digunakan untuk membuat penawaran atau menawarkan sesuatu.
  Contoh :
  – Shall I make coffee for you ?. (Bolehkah saya membuatkan kopi untuk Anda?).
• Digunakan untuk membuat saran.
  Contoh :
  – Shall we go to the zoo tomorrow ?. (Bagaimana kalau kita pergi ke kebun binatang besok?).
• Digunakan untuk menyatakan kewajiban.
  Contoh:
  - Every citizen shall pay the tax. (Setiap penduduk harus membayar pajak)

Should

Should merupakan bentuk past tense dari kata Shall dan biasanya digunakan untuk menyatakan hal-hal sebagai berikut :

• Should sebagai bentuk past tense dari shall, penggunaan should ini sering kita jumpai dalam kalimat tidak langsung (indirect speech).
  Contoh :
  – She said that I should visit her tomorrow. (Dia bilang bahwa saya akan mengunjunginya besok).
• Fungsi should berikutnya adalah untuk menyatakan sebuah nasehat (advice).
  Contoh :
  – You should eat more fruit. (Anda harus lebih banyak makan buah-buahan)
• Untuk membentuk kalimat yang menunjukkan kewajiban (duty).
  Contoh :
  – You should pay your debt. (Anda harus membayar hutangmu).
• Should juga bisa menunjukkan sebuah kemungkinan (probability).
  Contoh :
  - If it should rain, I will stay at home. (Jika hari hujan, Saya akan tinggal dirumah).
• Membuat pengandaian untuk waktu yang akan datang.
  Contoh :
  – Should she fall, she shall notify me. (Seandainya dia gagal, dia akan memberitahu saya).

Will

Will digunakan untuk menunjukkan hal-hal sebagai berikut :

• Will digunakan untuk menunjukkan tindakan yang akan dilakukan (futurity).
  Contoh :
  – I will buy a new car tomorrow. (Saya akan membeli sebuah mobil baru besok).
• Untuk menunjukkan keinginan atau kemauan.
  Contoh :
  – I will help you. (Saya akan membantu Anda).
• Untuk menyatakan kebenaran abadi (timeless truth).
  Contoh :
  – The stone will sink in the water. (Batu akan tenggelam di dalam air).

Would

Would merupakan bentuk past tense dari will dan digunakan untuk menyatakan hal-hal berikut :

• Menyatakan kebiasaan yang dilakukan pada masa lampau.
  Contoh :
  – When she was a girl, her mother would tell her stories. (Ketika dia masih kecil, Ibunya suka bercerita kepadanya).
• Untuk memperhalus/mempersopan suatu permohonan.
  Contoh :
  – Would you mind helping me ?. (Maukah Anda menolong saya ?).
• Menunjukkan karakter seseorang yang telah diduga sebelumnya.
  Contoh :
  – Every morning she would go for a long walk. (Setiap pagi dia akan pergi untuk berjalan-jalan).

Can

Can yang berarti “bisa” dalam Bahasa Indonesia dapat digunakan untuk menyatakan hal-hal sebagai berikut :

• Menyatakan kemampuan atau kemahiran (ability) seseorang.
  Contoh:
  – Can you speak Mandarin ?. (Apakah anda bisa berbahasa Mandarin ?)
• Menyatakan permintaan ijin.
  Contoh :
  – You can ask me a personal question. (Anda bisa bertanya soal pribadi kepada saya).
• Menyatakan kemungkinan.
  Contoh :
  – You can be a millionaire. (Anda bisa menjadi seorang jutawan).

NB : Can juga digunakan untuk (Main Verbs) yang berarti mengalengkan atau memasukkan dalam kaleng. Contoh :
- They are canning potatoes. (Mereka sedang mengalengkan kentang).

Could

Could merupakan bentuk lampau dari Can yang digunakan untuk menyatakan hal-hal sebagai berikut :

• Menyatakan kemampuan atau kemahiran (ability) seseorang mengerjakan sesuatu.
  Contoh :
  I could play football when I was a kid.. (Saya bisa bermain bola ketika saya masih kecil).
• Menyatakan permintaan ijin untuk kalimat yang lebih sopan.
  Contoh :
  Could I see your identity card ?. (Bolehkan saya melihat kartu identitas anda ?).

Australian police defend alerting Indonesia to 'Bali Nine'

Australian police Monday defended alerting Indonesia to a Bali drug-smuggling ring despite knowing offenders could face the death penalty, but said they regretted that two of them were executed. Nine Australians were arrested in the resort island of Bali in 2005 over their involvement with a syndicate bringing drugs to Sydney, with Andrew Chan, 31, and Myuran Sukumaran, 34, killed by a firing squad last week despite pleas for mercy from Canberra. Australian Federal Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin said he regretted that Indonesia executed the men, but did not believe he owed Chan and Sukumaran's families an apology. "We can't apologise for the role that we have to try to stop illicit drugs from coming into this community," he said. Colvin said that faced with an identical set of circumstances but using newer guidelines which were updated in 2009, police investigators "may well not choose to go down the same path they did in 2005". The newer guidelines call on police to consider the risk of the death penalty at a much earlier stage in investigations and have, at times, restricted dealings with foreign partners. But Colvin stressed that to crack down on transnational crime, Australian police had to work with other countries, including those with the death penalty. He denied reports that the Australian investigation was triggered by a tip-off from the father of one of the Bali Nine, saying police were already looking into the syndicate but did not have enough evidence to make any arrests prior to their departure for Indonesia. Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Mike Phelan said he agonised over the decision to ask for assistance from Indonesia rather than arrest the drugs mules on their return to Australia, but said he was driven by a desire to stop the syndicate. "To let them come back through to Australia, we may have grabbed a couple of mules, but we would not have been able to have any evidence in relation to the wider syndicate," he said. Phelan said his decision was made in the knowledge that Australians could be exposed to the death penalty. "Yes, I knew full well by handing over the information and requesting surveillance, if they found them in possession of drugs they'd take action and expose them to the death penalty," he said. "And every time I look back, I still think it's a difficult decision, but given what I knew at that particular time and what our officers knew, I would take a lot of convincing to make a different decision." Australian police were able to arrest and convict six other people in Sydney and Brisbane on the information received from the Indonesians. (Jakarta Post)

SHORT STORY
At the time. My friend in college visited my home. I met with my friends in bogor station. They names is Reza, Anandyo, Adam, and Darian. We direct to my home and take a rest, but later i will visited puncak. Trip to puncak, in street traffic jam because a car fail. We are very bored in trip. Trip to puncak spend time during 2,5 hours, maybe if dont got traffic jam, we are arrive in puncak just 1,5 hour.
We are arrive in puncak. "Very happy because in Jakarta there was no view like that", said my friends. And then i bought " Ubi Cilembu" the taste very delicious. After from puncak, we are visited to igor's house near with puncak. We are direct swimming, there is very cold. And then we are took a picture and view with mountains background, we enjoyed this moment. This holiday unforgettable in my life. Thanks a lot for my friends..

STORY DAILY ACTIVITY
My daily activity. Start from i awoke up  5 oclock and i prayed. Always everyday like that. Then i take a bath, prepare my t shirt and jeans pants. Then i am breakfast. I am prepare for go to my college. I go to college 7 oclock, because entered class 9 oclock. Trip to college spend time 1,5 hours. I direct entered in class. I take a rest 12 oclock, and the i and my friends to food store. I am entered class again 1 oclock. Already study in class 3 oclock. Then i go home. Trip to my home traffic jam because together with employee worker. I arrive in my home 5 oclock. I direct take a bath. Then i watching television for entertaiment. I go to bed 9 oclock and i slept. Good night..
